Why Do Opposites Attract?

We’ve all heard the trope that opposites attract when it comes to romantic love, but why is this the case? We’re going to take a closer look, and find out why you’re often more able to find love with someone who is very different from you.

What is it about difference, rather than familiarity, that is so attractive?

Opposites Are Mysterious

When we first meet someone who is totally different from ourselves and everything we recognize, it’s easy to perceive them as mysterious - exotic even. When someone is instantly recognizable as being similar to ourselves, we can find them predictable and boring, whereas with someone different, we anticipate surprise and become all the more intrigued.

We Value Qualities We Don’t Possess

When we meet someone who seems very different from us, it may be because we are honing in on qualities that we ourselves feel we lack. For example, you might feel like quite a neurotic person, and when you meet someone who seems chilled and laid back, you will likely respect and find this person attractive and want to be around them - perhaps hoping they could teach you something.

Balance is Important

Two people who have the same extreme personality traits don’t always encourage each other to grow and change as people. For example, two very shy people can sometimes only make each other more shy. Having two opposites can help balance each other out.

The Signs That You’re a Romantic at Heart

Do you go to mush whenever there’s a rom-com on the TV? Do you daydream about a handsome stranger sweeping you off your feet, perhaps transporting you away from ordinary life on the back of a valiant steed? Apart from being a first rate fantasist, these are all signs that you’re simply as old romantic at heart (and possibly that you might have seen too many movies!). Here are the things you’ll do if you’re a romantic sort of girl.

You Imagine Your Perfect Guy All the Time

Your dream man is never far from your thoughts, and he is PERFECT. Whether it’s the looks you want and you’re picturing a tall, dark and handsome stranger. Or you want a sensitive soul who’ll write you poetry. Or maybe you prefer the gruff and silent type? Whatever your fantasy man, if you’re a romantic you find your dream man is often on your mind.

You Cry at Romantic Movies

If romantic movies really get you in the feels, it’s a clear sign that you’re a hopeless romantic at heart. If The Notebook is your favorite movie and you cry every time you watch it without fail, it means that romantic love is something you identify with closely, and you have strong emotions associated with it. You old softie!

Reasons Why Montreal Makes the Perfect Romantic Getaway

If you’re looking for a romantic city break but Paris is a bit far, look a bit closer to home for another French city which your lover will adore. Montreal is a beautiful city, with plenty to see and do all year round. Here are just three of the reasons why Montreal makes the perfect romantic getaway.

Botanical Gardens

There’s something very romantic about strolling hand-in-hand with your loved one, and there’s no better place to do this than the Botanical Gardens. Go late in the day to make sure you enjoy the Chinese Lanterns exhibition. The soft, multi-colored lights will illuminate the gardens all around you, creating a magical and enchanted experience that you’ll never forget.

Head to a speakeasy

Montreal still has a number of speakeasies, and if you’re looking for an intimate atmosphere, you won’t find much better. The best ones are small and hidden underground so you might need to ask around to find out the location. If they were easy to spot, that would defeat the whole purpose of their existence!

Go kayaking

The Lachine Canal offers peace, seclusion and a very romantic atmosphere so if you’re feeling active, an afternoon gently paddling on the water could be a beautiful idea. A great way to see the area, as well as escaping the crowds, you can opt to hire bikes or simply stroll along if getting on the water isn’t your thing.

Romance: Foods to get you in the mood

There’s nothing like a good romance novel to get your heart racing and inspire your own romantic thoughts. Of course, there are other ways to get in the mood and in some cases, the food you eat can play a big part in that.

So, if that latest heart-racing romance novel has got you in the mood, here are some other natural aphrodisiacs which help along the way.

Chili peppers

The help release the endorphins in your brain which help make you feel. Chili peppers can also increase your heart-rate and generally heat up your body, all great when you are looking to spice things up.

Chocolate

Don’t go rushing out for that candy bar. Dark chocolate is the order of the day when it comes to getting in the mood. It can deliver a rise in dopamine, which increases pleasurable feelings. It also helps create serotonin, another happy chemical in your brain.

Watermelon

This fruit can improve circulations by relaxing blood vessels, which can help increase libido.

Banana

A great source of energy due to its high potassium and vitamin B levels, bananas also contain bromelain, which boosts the production of testosterone.

Avocado

Generally credited with contributing to a more youthful and vibrant feeling, avocados are high in vitamin E, which helps with healthy skin.

Pomegranate

Drinking pomegranate juice has been found to help with increased levels of testosterone and the pomegranate has long been associated with virility, due to its abundance of seeds. According to Greek mythology, the goddess of love Aphrodite planted the first pomegranate tree.

Romantic activities to do in winter

As the winter hits, couples often find activities are much more limited to the summer months, however, that’s not the case. With winter, you just need to be on the lookout for events and a little bit more creative with what you can do.

Movie night - The first idea is the ever so classic movie night in. Majority of us would rather spend our winter evenings cozied up inside watching movies with all the snacks in-sight rather than hitting the clubs. To make the movie night a bit different; build yourself an indoor fort. It can have loads of pillows, blankets, fairy lights and of course, any takeaway you wish.

Bowling - Probably one of the best and most competitive indoor activities, bowling has to be up there with things to do in winter. You could challenge each other to a game, have a classic burger and fries, and then have a go on all the arcade machines. A bowling alley has plenty to do!

Baking day - If you’d like to get a little bit more creative than a baking day will be right up your street. You can make each other's favorite sweet treats and have a laugh in the process.

Scrapbooking afternoon - Another creative idea is scrapbooking. Winter time is the perfect period to look back over old memories and documenting them in a book. Print out all your latest photos and see what you’ve collected over the years and compile them in a scrapbook. It’ll be a reminiscent activity to do together.
